Prof. Kalina Bontcheva devised and led the PHEME project (, which at its launch in January 2014 was amongst the first to study computational methods for detecting and tracking online misinformation. Bontcheva coined the term “pheme” to describe a meme of uncertain veracity. The PHEME project also created several public datasets that record rumours and misinformation, which can be used for training and evaluating the accuracy of machine-learning algorithms. Bontcheva is now the academic director of the WeVerify project, which develops intelligent content-verification tools for journalists and citizens, alongside new AI methods for detecting online misinformation and analysing its spread and impact.
