Prof. Kalina Bontcheva devised and led the PHEME project (http://pheme.eu), which at its launch in January 2014 was amongst the first to study computational methods for detecting and tracking online misinformation. Bontcheva coined the term “pheme” to describe a meme of uncertain veracity. The PHEME project also created several public datasets that record rumours and misinformation, which can be used for training and evaluating the accuracy of machine-learning algorithms. Bontcheva is now the academic director of the WeVerify project, which develops intelligent content-verification tools for journalists and citizens, alongside new AI methods for detecting online misinformation and analysing its spread and impact.
