Sergey Smirnov is the editor-in-chief of independent Russian media outlet Mediazona. Mediazona was founded in 2014 by activists from the Pussy Riot group. The outlet covers the penal system in Russia, as well as court and legislature proceedings, and human rights issues. Sergey graduated from Moscow State Pedagogical university with a degree in history with the highest distinction and worked as a history and social sciences teacher at secondary schools in Moscow for over 10 years. Mr. Smirnov is an experienced journalist, he worked as an editor at Gazeta.ru and deputy editor-in-chief for Russian Planet before joining Mediazona.
