Yana graduated from Higher School of Economics (HSE) in St.Petersburg, Russia with a degree in mathematics in 2013. She is a Young Faculty Development Programme fellow at HSE. Yana is a member of St. Petersburg Public Monitoring Commission (PMC) (the current term is from November 2016 to November 2019). PMC is a non-profit social elective body, which monitors human rights in penitentiary systems in St. Petersburg. Yana visits prisons and pre-trials detention facilities and produces reports on the treatment of prisoners.  Her coverage of penitentiary centers in St.Petersburg brings public attention to the abuse and torture of prisoners by police and agents of the Federal Security Services.
